Sheikh, I respect my parents, I am kind to them, I don’t raise my voice to them as instructed in Islam. But my question is, is it also compulsory to obey everything they say? Like things which are not fard like they say to shorten the hair but what if I don’t like short hair and don’t cut them short?

ANSWER: If they order you to do something they believe that it is best for you and there is no harm on you because of it, it is advisable to obey them.

Sheikh, everyday while I out to the mosque for fajr all my family members are sleeping. I’m the youngest son and I live with my parents and an older sister. Do I wake them up? I asked them if I should and they showed reluctance. What should I do?

ANSWER: You should wake them up before going. If they don’t get up the sin is on them while you have done your job. If they clearly tell you not to wake them up, do not wake them.

Who have upper right on man income(wife or mother)? My father in law still earning.

ANSWER: Only the man. His responsibility is to fulfil his wife’s and children’s basic needs and if his parents are well off, he doesn’t need to give them anything. His money is his responsibility and no one else’s.

Mother and daughter in law living in separate cities. Mother unhappy and wants her to serve. mother tells her daughters about the problems and complains (truth/false) she has from her daughter in law. If try to turn the talk, she cries and goes into depression and becomes very angry, hyper and abnormal. Does her complains(true/false) fall under ghibah or slander? What should the daughter do then?

I am aware that we have to respect our parents & Allah says be humble never say uff.If parents & grandparents follow cultural tradition like kids should bend down & say Salam, going to graveyard & putting flowers on grave. I have noticed if I try to say that its not right thing to do they get upset saying now kids will teach us right and wrong. How to deal in such cases pls help.

ANSWER: You must advise them diplomatically with good manners, knowledge, and wisdom and never cross the line of respect. However, you must never compromise your religion or give in to their pressure.

What should i do when my mother tells me: to do haram or makroo like shaving beard, Al Qaza etc or dont talk to me, leave the the house etc?

ANSWER: You must not listen to her in these matters as there’s no obedience to the created at the cost of disobedience to the Creator. However, you must handle these situations firmly but diplomatically, without being rude to her as this is one of the major sins in Islam.

Sometimes I intend to do something for my mother but then ask ALLAH reward me for these actions for my mother but after some days when my mom says u dont do a single thing.I reply in frustration by saying U never appreciate never praise not say good of me for any work i do for u,reminding her my actions.Is this shirk.Am i non muslim.Do i have to shahadah and ghusl?

ANSWER: This is not shirk but it is a major sin! You have no excuse at all for replying to your mother like this.

I am living in a joint family.My whole family wants me to get married with one of my cousins except my mother and sisters.I don’t have any problem marrying with my cousin either.My mother and sister don’t want me to marry my cousin because they think that she is not capable of doing many things however she is an aalim and also hv great fikr for deen.Problem with me is that if I decline marriage offer the entire family will get divided and if I accept,my mother will get sad.

ANSWER: This is your life, but I advise you not to marry her if your mother doesn’t like her, as this will cause many problems in the future, unless you live separately from your family! Your mother and sister want a servant to serve them in the house!

I would like to know what I can do with my sister. She does not see my mum or call her. She says because my mum is negative. She also does not call or see my sister. It has been 6 months. I have advised her but she does not listen to me. What can I do? Please advise me

ANSWER: Your sister is sinful. What she is doing will prevent her from entering paradise as no one who is disrespectful and undutiful to his mother would enter Paradise. If she doesn’t listen to you, ask a wise elder in your family to talk to her as you have done your duty.

10 yrs I’ve done job and did my best for my parents.Even I had secrifice a lot what they don’t know.Allah knows best. My question is, when I did this my aim wasn’t for Allah or to get sawab from Allah.only to make my parents happy, anyhow to solve their problem. So, now I am thinking, do I get any sawab from Allah? And when they praise me I would happy, was it for myself?
