Backbiting

QUESTION: Is it permissible in islam for me and my siblings in the absence of our parents to remember, talk and laugh about their behaviour while scolding us because they are funny memories and we think affectionately of them, saying some day we might not have them around to get scolded.

ANSWER: If it is something they wouldn’t mind if they heard you all then no problem, otherwise its not permissible as it would come under backbiting.

QUESTION: In a government office the guards didn’t understand that need to go inside because I already was called before to the cabin. The guards were so frustrating but one guard behaved as if I don’t understand then I felt insulted. I said that they don’t have brain infront of my father and a stranger. Am I sinful is it backbiting

ANSWER: You were sinful talking to men in the first place, let alone insulting them like this. I don’t know how your father tolerated you speaking in front of him like this as if you were another man!

QUESTION: If a parent complains about their child to their spouse simply to vent their frustration does this l count as backbiting? In other words, if they are merely complaining about the child and expressing their frustration to their spouse, and the child would dislike what was said if they heard it, would this be considered backbiting?

ANSWER: This is not backbiting if they say it to discuss & make a plan to discipline the child.

QUESTION: Sometimes my dad says bad things about people. I’m afraid it might come under backbiting. I know if I try to tell him that he shouldn’t do this, he might get angry. When my mom told him to stop one time, he got angry and stopped talking to her for sometime. So can we just listen to him until he stops without telling him to stop?

ANSWER: No, this is not permissible, otherwise you will be sinful too. You should discreetly try to change the topic, but if he doesn’t stop then you must leave the room.

QUESTION: Is complaining to your parents about a classmate or roommate who is annoying, mistreating, or wronging you considered backbiting? If so, are Muslims only allowed to vent or complain directly to Allah, or are there circumstances where speaking to others about someone’s behaviour is permissible?

ANSWER: If you are complaining to get advice & to get the issue resolved then this is not backbiting and you are not sinful for that.

QUESTION: My grandmother has been troubling my mother since her marriage. If my mother shares her talks with me to lighten her grief, does this come under gheebat/backbiting?

ANSWER: If they are backbiting, you must change the topic (no need to ask them to change the topic) and if they insist even after this, then you should leave the place.

QUESTION: My husband shares most daily personal details of our married life with his parents and siblings, and he says it is because they care and want to be involved. Is this Islamically appropriate, or should some level of privacy be maintained between spouses?
