ANSWER: You must wear the full hijab (abaya & niqab if you wear the niqab outside) in front of them. You must not free mix, nor chitchat or socualize with your male cousins or any other non mahram men! The gathering should be segregated.

QUESTION: I was born out of wedlock, my father is Christian and his whole family, my father accepted me and he told his family later, for now some of his sisters and brothers we communicate. So I’m still obliged to maintain ties of kinship, because some live abroad and we haven’t met, many cousins are girls, so how to maintain ties of kinship.

ANSWER: Of course he is sinful! He must have stepped back and not allow her to touch him, let alone hug as Prophet ﷺ said its better to be stabbed in the head by an iron needle than to touch a non mahram

QUESTION: Regarding visiting my grandparents aunts or uncles if I know non Mahram female cousins and aunts will be present and uncovered. My family is loose in faith and does not observe Hijab. I fear that if I stop visiting to avoid seeing them they will label me an extremist and cause serious problems. What’s the best thing I could do?

ANSWER: Try to visit at a time when your female relatives (non mahram) would not be around. Keep the visit short and sweet and if they enter the room, lower your gaze, make an excuse and leave. Call them often to check up on them

QUESTION: Me girl. My aunt’s husband, son is non mahram. When they come my aunt daughter also come and there is my parents and grandma. I cover properly. It is very difficult to segregate as family don’t really practice islam. Am i sinful if i am unable to segreate. I meet & talk briefly & try level best to go in a room. Is that displeasing Allah?

ANSWER: You must not mix with them! You are sinful if you do.

QUESTION: Do I have to visit my husband’s non-Muslim family when they invite us (including uncles, cousins, etc.)? I don’t feel comfortable there, especially when it’s so crowded. But I wonder if I should go for the sake of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala and for my child, or if Allah would be displeased if I don’t go, since it’s my husbands family. What is your advice?

ANSWER: She can travel back home without her male mahram due to necessity as Allah had told in the Quran a person can eat pork in dire situations where it’s a matter of life & death. There’s always an exception to the rule due to DIRE necessity.

QUESTION: Sheikh does the mother in law become mahram for the husband right after the marriage or does she become mahram only after the husband consumates the marriage with his wife?
