QUESTION: My mother suspects my father still practices sihr, but I can’t verify it or speak to him peacefully. When visiting he teaches my son beliefs I reject(Shiaa). She used to tell fortunes but says she stopped. I’m worried and unsure whom to trust. Islamically, must I visit them, or may I keep my distance?

ANSWER: If this disobedience is in halal things that they want or need and it has no harm on you, yes, this is Uquq.

QUESTION: I know the best form of charity one can do is to spend on one’s family. In this regard, can I give my younger sister a fixed amount from my salary every month, like pocket money? Will that count as charity? Because almost all the beggars I find outside are like professional beggars. Please advise.

ANSWER: If she is in need and doesn’t have an income, yes this would be charity

QUESTION: My mother has severe paranoia and psychosis, forbidding and constantly fearing us from once Jumu‘ah, phones, going out or opening doors due to delusions. Refusing causes violent screaming. She lacks illness insight. I love her, but this is overwhelming. Islamically, where is the line for parent obedience here? What must I obey, and when may I respectfully refuse paranoid demands?

ANSWER: There is no pleasing or obedience to anyone at the cost of displeasing and disobedience to Allah. You must not obey her if she is stopping you from your religious duties.

QUESTION: My family’s marriage proposal for me was almost fixed, but I never wanted it because I loved someone else. Despite telling them, I was pressured to agree. I didn’t speak to the chosen man for six months because I didn’t want the marriage. Eventually, he understood and the proposal stopped. Now everyone is deeply hurt, and some curse me. Am I sinful for stopping the marriage and hurting everyone?

ANSWER: You are sinful for being in a relationship with someone else but you are not sinful for refusing to marry someone you don’t want.

QUESTION: My father pays my university fees and tells me to study certain subjects or skills. I can do what he asks, but I also want to study other things. I fear that if I tell him I understand what he wants but am studying other things too, he may stop paying my fees. Am I sinful for not telling him everything I study and continuing to use his money for my university education? Am I wasting his money?

ANSWER: This is not permissible! He must know what he is paying your fees for, otherwise its deceiving him!

QUESTION: Is it permissible in islam for me and my siblings in the absence of our parents to remember, talk and laugh about their behaviour while scolding us because they are funny memories and we think affectionately of them, saying some day we might not have them around to get scolded.

ANSWER: If it is something they wouldn’t mind if they heard you all then no problem, otherwise its not permissible as it would come under backbiting.

QUESTION: If a father passes away and the mother, adult daughter, and young adult son are all capable of working, is the son Islamically obligated to cover all household expenses—even if this leaves him with barely enough for himself, while the women can spend their income on personal wants? Or should all working family members contribute toward household expenses according to their financial ability?

ANSWER: As long as the mother and sister are financially capable, the son is not obliged to provide for them.

QUESTION: Sheikh,a girl whose parents are divorced since years ago and her dad doesn’t visit them or talk to them neither cares or anything about her. She has no contact with him and neither her dads family.Now the sister is worried about the marriage and her wali. Is her dad still her wali or if not then whos the wali of her,since also her dads family have 0 contact with her?
