My wife is working for government and from time to time she has to travel along for assignment. What is the Islamic position on women who have to travel along as required by her work?

It is forbidden for a woman to travel without a male mahram for any reason.

My question is regarding those who we are supposed to keep good ties of kinship with, like our Mahrams. What about those who are from the same family as you and they are not close relatives……

Is it permissible for a sister to travel who has no mahram to travel by herself, on the condition that her grandparents are in their old age and death can happen any minute and the sister wants to see them?… …Also she has to wait 3 years before she gets married and in those years time the grandparents may pass away. On this condition is it permissible for her to travel without no mahram?

No. This is not permissible and seeing her grandparents is not a legitimate reason to travel without a mahram. It is not permissible for her to travel to perform one of the pillars of Islam without a mahram.

If they are alone in the room, this is not permissible whether she is praying or not. If they are not alone and there are others, this is permissible. She should try her best to be away from their eyes as much as possible

Does the ruling of not sleeping under the same sheet apply to daughter and mother as well? Even if they are sleeping at far ends?

There is a hadeeth that Sheikh Al Albani authenticated in the past and then reviewed it and finally said that it was not authentic.

I am planning to go for Umrah with my family. My wife’s mother wants to accompany us is it permissible. As per my knowledge women can not go on journey without the mehram(Brother,Father,Husband or son) or any such relation person accompany them?
