This is a big innovation that is baseless and was never done by the Prophet salla Allahu alaihi wa sallam nor his companions.

This is not part of the Sunnah and most likely they are considering this as part of the rituals of that day. If it is only the customs of that country or family and has nothing to do with the murder of Husain, this is permissible in sha’ Allah.
