In our masjid when someone we know dies the imam will usually make du’a for them after fard prayers and we will respond to him. please is this in the sunnah.

when someone dies the relatives order food for 3 days and everyone eats from it, not just the family of the deceased. after that we don’t have any sort of bidah. no 40 days or 1 yr, etc. what is the ruling on everyone coming together & eating this food? can you plz elaborate this topic so it would be better for us to understand and explain.
