My father had an illegitimate child 30 years ago. We just found this out recently. Is this 30 year old lady a Mahram to me now?

ANSWER: She was born out of wedlock and hence she is not your sister. However, you can’t marry her just to be safe but she is not your mahram.

If someone doesn’t want to celebrate or wish anyone on birthdays but around that person everyone – family etc. do it…does having cake and giving duas (no wishes, no happy birthday, only dua) makes a person sinful?

ANSWER: Participating in birthdays and specifically giving duas on that day is not permissible.

When we fast on days other than ramadhan,are the du’as for sehri & iftar the same or different?if different then what are those?

ANSWER: There are no Duas for sahri. The dua after breaking the fast is same for both fard as well as voluntary fasts.

ANSWER: You don’t need to bring her over to take care of her. As long as your siblings are taking care of her there, this is sufficient. If she needs financial help, you should send that to your siblings.

By Allah’s grace I regularly give certain amount in charity from monthly salary, so can I combine the intention of giving charity (in the same charity amount) on behalf of my deceased father and father in law?

ANSWER: Yes you can and the reward will be shared between the two.

When someone dies in our area, they don’t cook food in that particular house (in that house where the death took place). The other people of the village provide them food and cooked vegetables on that day to serve the people who came for funeral. They believe something due to which they don’t cook food on that day. Is this belief correct?

ANSWER: It is the sunnah that people send the family of the deceased food so that they don’t cook while in their grief. This food should be for the family of the deceased and not for guests and other mourners.

Can a woman who prays at home also get the reward of her saying “ameen” and it coinciding with the angels even though she is praying alone? Or must it only be in congregation and at the masjid

ANSWER: No this is specific with congregation in masjid. She will be rewarded for following the sunnah.

When doing ghusl after intercourse we know that water should reach the hair root. But is it necessary to wet rest of the hair? I mean to the root to tip?the whole hair? If the hair is braided and water does not reach inside the braid,does it invalided the ghusl?

ANSWER: Yes. However if it is braided then you do not have to open it for the ghusl to remove sexual impurity. Just soak it with water.

Sheikh can a woman perform ruqya on herself by listening a surah and then drinking water during her menstrual cycle?

ANSWER: She can herself perform ruqyah during menses without any problem. What is Ruqyah and how one should do it?

Sheikh, if an old lady is unable to pray while sitting on ground due to knee pain, can she put a table in front of her on which she can perform sujood while sitting on a chair.

ANSWER: One must not use a table to do sujood. She should place her hands on her knees and bow down while sitting on a chair or on the ground.
