A lot of us braid as protective styling. Please clarify.

If it’s wool or ribbon and it doesn’t look like hair at all and everyone can say that this does not look like hair at all, in this case this is permissible. However, if it resembles hair in any form then this is absolutely prohibited and one of the major sins in Islam, whether it’s made of real hair or any other artificial fibers.
