The punishment for consuming intoxicants is that Allah would not accept his prayer for 40 days.
If he prays, he will not be rewarded.
But if he says to himself: as long as I am not going to be rewarded for these prayers, I will not pray them. In this case, once he leaves prayer, he is not Muslim any more.
