ANSWER:

It is not true, neither it is valid what people do. This is an innovation. 

Is it true that rewards of Quranic recitation, dhikr (reading surah Ikhlas 11 times or surah fatiha 3 times etc.) can be sent to a person who has passed on? I have seen people gather to recite Quran on behalf of somebody who has passed, to pass on rewards to them. Is this valid?
