The Prophet salla Allahu alaihi wa sallam used to stop Muslims from praying between pillars as this interrupts the row. However, if the place is small, it becomes permissible due to necessity. If there is a row started and you come, you should join them but if you come when the row is full and you are making a new row, you should advise the people not to pray in the new row between pillars
