The most authentic opinion is that the thighs are awrah. However, what the footballers wear usually reaches their knees and it is not usually close range shots and hence, it might be permissible to watch it occasionally. 

Sheikh I saw the video regarding football,I love to watch football but my question is awra of players are not fully covered,and you said that rasoolullah ( pbuh) when he was with Abubakr (r.a) and umar (r.a) he showed something in his thigh, can you surely say occasionally watching football is not haram ?
