However, I recently found out that it is not permissible at all. I came to my home country to be with my family a few months back and now it’s time for me to go. I am in the last year of my PhD (I am writing up my research report)and I had signed a contract with the university to complete this project and on that basis they gave me scholarship. Now I have used up all the money (there is no way I can return it). Is it permissible for me to travel to the UK for the last time (none of my mahrams are in a position to accompany me) and complete my work and make taubah to Allah? InshAllah I am determined to never travel without a mahram again after this.Is it not haram to breach a contract? I am in a dilemma! Please let me know what should I do? JazakAllah Khair.

This is a dilemma indeed.

On one hand, the Prophet salla Allahu alaihi wa sallam forbade the traveling of a woman without a Mahram. On the other hand, Allah had forgiven the things done out of real necessity.

Therefore, it appears to me that if there is a breach of contract and a possibility that they will sue you for the money paid to you, I believe that if you are safe while traveling, it is permissible to go this last time to get your research or paper finished.

Shaykh. I started my PhD in the UK in 2008. At that time I did not know that a woman could not travel without a mahram. Actually, a local shaykh told me that since plane journeys are safe these days it is permissible for a woman to travel on her own.
