It is not permissible to shave the beard. This is a sin and the consensus of scholars is on forbidding it.
As for trimming it, it is an issue of dispute. I believe that the most authentic opinion is that this is not permissible except for someone whose beard exceeds the length of a fist and it harms him or gives him difficulties in life.
