It is not permissible to attend gatherings full of innovations.

In our culture a lot of people practice innovations such as holding gatherings 3,7 and 40 days after a person’s death.Is it permissible to attend these gatherings if family members force you to attend or not attending will cause strained relations with one’s relatives?

My question is regarding the souls of righteous people after death. Is it in the Illiyyeen or in the body in the grave? Is the soul returned to the body in the grave only for the questioning? Actually, there are many hadith and I am not able to figure out what our belief regarding soul after death should be. Some hadith say it is sent back to earth from heavens. Other says in Illiyyeen.

My father passed away 2 days ago.so my relatives want to do occasion like some people gather my house they make dua and food will be served for them from our house.but I refused to do it.but they say its our culture and it obligatory.but I say I hear from saudi sheikh(you).he say it not permissible.one of my brother from saudi he say saudi people do it they call it azza can you clearify.
