If you are sure to finish it before the takbeer of the Imam, hasten to finish it. But if you know that you will miss the first takbeer, break it and join the Congregation.

Dear Sheikh, I wanted to ask a question regarding the authentic ruling on praying sunnah while the iqama is called for the fard praying while you are in masjid.What should a person do when he already started his sunnah salah? And can we leave sunnah Moakada. One of my friend says it is almost a fard.
