He is not a mahram for her till the marriage is consummated. Allah says: Forbidden to you are your mothers,your daughters, …… and the stepdaughters – who are your foster-children, born of your wives with whom you have consummated the marriage; but if you have not consummated the marriage with them, there will be no blame upon you (if you marry their daughters).

A man has married a divorcee who has a teenage daughter. The marriage has not yet involved sexual intercourse and due to illness this is not likely for many months. Is the man mahram to his wife’s daughter? I have been told he is non-mahram until consummation – but what is the Sharia definition of consummation? Does it necessitate intercourse?
