The name is Arabic without any doubt. It is mentioned in the Quran in 3 locations and one of the great companions of the Prophet salla Allahu alaihi wa sallam who was martyred, his name was Assim Ibn Thabit.
However, I believe that the appropriate spelling would be A’sim.
It means “preventer”.
