What actually are the six kalimas. I have seen people teach those to their children only in South Asian countries and say that memorizing these is necessary and only after learning and believing these you are a Muslim. Is it so?

Recently my family called some sufi sheikhs at home and they were reading the full Quran on my mom and sister. What they did was before they started reading they had a glass of water and every body was drinking from it.
