If it’s not for eid – when then? Yes, you may buy gifts for the loved ones, but they shouldn’t be obligatory or being exchanged! Eid is an occasion of jubilation and happiness and buying gifts increase this!

Is it from the sunnah to buy gifts for family/friends on Eid? Or is this imitating the kaafir? If so, can I donate sadaqah to charity on somebodys behalf as a gift to them so we will both gain reward from Allaah?
