It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) ascended the minbar and said: Ameen, ameen, ameen. It was said: O Messenger of Allah, you ascended the minbar and said, Ameen, ameen, ameen. He said: Jibreel came to me and said: ˜If Ramadan comes and a person is not forgiven, he will enter Hell and Allah will cast him far away. Say Ameen. So I said Ameen. He said: ˜O Muhammad, if both or one of a persons parents are alive and he does not honour them and he dies, he will enter Hell and Allah will cast him far away. Say Ameen. So I said Ameen. He said: If you are mentioned in a persons presence and he does not send blessings upon you and he dies, he will enter Hell and Allah will cast him far away. Say Ameen. So I said Ameen. [ibn Hibbaan, Saheeh Al-Albani]
If you could kindly check out for me why such a person would go to Hell if it is not a sin (not to send salam). I am sennding salam on the Prophet when his name is mentioned alhamdulllah but I am just wondering about this hadith. BaraakAllahu feek respected Sheikh.

The way I understand it is that whoever doesn’t offer salutation whenever the name of the Prophet salla Allahu alaihi wa sallam is mentioned and he is admitted to hell for other sins, may Allah cast him far away and not reduce his sentence in hell.
Therefore, the punishment is not for not offer the salutation. The punishment is for other sins but not reducing his sentence is a consequence for not offering the salutation.
