Giving iftar is a good deed and the deceased will benefit from it. Asking people to make Duaa for him is an innovation.

My cousin wanted to give iftar in the masjid for my father who have passed away 8 month ago. He says to my mother that my father is going to get the rewards. People will pry for him after iftar and he will be benefited. Is is true? Or this is an innovation?
