ANSWER:

You must not break relationships even because of this. You should try to change the topic and give them dawah that backbiting is a major sin but if they persist then you should leave the room. You must not be part of any haram activities with them. 

If it’s totally unavoidable then you must at least maintain ties over the phone. 

 

I know the virtues of maintaining kin ship as it is strongly recommended in Islam and there is curse on breaking the kinship,but in my case maintaining kinship is resulting in commiting sins like Gibah and other sins. Please advise shall I continue my aquintence with my close relatives or stay away to avoid sins

When it is said maintain bonds of kinship , who are the people other than your parents, grandparents, uncles , aunts , cousins that we should maintain connection with. Does it go as far as your parents uncles and their cousins and our second and third cousins too.
