If you have done your studies in the basics of Islamic sciences and you
know Arabic, it is permissible not to have a math’hab, providing you
follow the Quran and sunnah with the understanding of the salaf.

Certain ppl say unless your a mujtahid you HAVE to follow a madhab. Others say if you’re a student of knowledge you don’t have to. Question is; if I have access to Bukhari, Muslim, books like Riyad etc. And acces to sheikhs like yourself that can answer my questions do I have to follow a madhab or can do my own authentic research on issues of fiqh. Also would I be described as a student of knowledge
