I have to pay my zakat al maal this week. I will give some of it to my uncle’s widow & kids who are poor and sick and live in the countryside in North Africa. However I don’t see them as I live in Europe…my mum is only going there in the summer. Can I give my mum the money now and she will give it to them in July or August?

ANSWER: Yes, zakat is still mandatory on it as long as it reaches or is beyond the nisab. This is why if the person is trustworthy, he should invest this money is something safe and halal so that it won’t be consumed by zakat.

Shaikh, I am from Bangladesh, a group of people collect zakat money and buy iftar items through this money and give these iftar items to poor fasting muslims. Can I give my zakat money to this group? Is it permissible the way they spend the zakat money?

ANSWER: Zakat should be given in cash to poor and needy Muslims in their and they will do as they wish with it. If the poor authorize him to buy food items with the zakat money for them then only it becomes permissible.

A Muslim had given a loan of Rs.5000 to his Muslim Miskeen maid. She is not able to return the loan. Can he help her by giving Rs. 7000/- from the Zakat Money and ask her to return the loan of Rs.5000/- Can this, Give & Take transaction take place simultaneously.

ANSWER: It’s not permissible to put a condition like this. You can give her the zakat and it’s her choice if she wants to return your money with that zakat money.

I have heard that it is recommended to give zakath to those needy people from among our relatives. But I cannot give it to my relatives as I have informed you earlier Iam giving my zakath without letting my husband know. Please advice me can I give to outsiders or should I give to my close relatives.

ANSWER: You can give it to strangers but the reward is less. Your husband has no right in controlling your zakat and when or to whom you pay it to!

I had not given zakath from past 2 years as I wasn’t aware about it. But now when I came to know about it my husband refuses to pay saying in shafi mazhab no zakath for the gold we wear and he wants me to wait until june when he’ll return hometown and discuss with scholars. So kindly let me know is it sinful to wait until June or should I pay now without letting him know.

Can i silently,without telling my parents, accept/give my permission to pay my zakat on my wealth. I dont have to announce it to them right? I can just keep it in my heart?

ANSWER: The question is not clear! If it’s your wealth then it’s mandatory that you give them permission verbally or in writing to pay zakat on it on your behalf.

Suppose I have to give Zakat 913.75 dollars. But to be safe and assure, I decided to donate 1000 dollars and intend that the money I am supposed to give zakat is given as zakat and the extra money is given as normal charity. Is this permissible? Or I have to give the fix amount that I counted and give intending only as zakat?
