ANSWER:

It’s not permissible at all for the imam to be your wali!

If your father genuinely is not responding, then go meet him personally and even after that if he refuses to be present for your wedding and is not willing to even deputise his brother or his father or your brother to act as your wali, then in this case go to your local authorised Islamic center or Muslim court and they will look into your case.

QUESTION: We know that if a wali of a women is not present her marriage is not valid, but what if she does not speak anymore with her father and has no parental uncles etc. The imam has to be the wali right? But is his prsence in the nikkah sufficient or must he act like a wali doing things like doing a background check on the men etc?
