ANSWER:
You must not return the gold you had received as a gift as they don’t have any right in it and they would be like a dog which vomited and now eating its vomit as described by our prophet salla Allahu alaihi wa sallam.
He is obliged to give you the cost of the hajj as agreed and if he doesn’t, he is sinful and you will take it from him on the day of judgement from his good deeds
