ANSWER:

Of course you should return back the salam, this is fard upon you.

There’s nothing in islam which says that we should not give salam or not return it while eating.  

 

When we are having our meals and someone comes across us and does salaam, can we answer saying walaikumasalam or when we are having our meals and if someone known comes towards us, can we do salaam, I’m asking this as I have seen some people who do not greet or answer the salaam while eating
