ANSWER:

It is an issue of dispute whether it is sinful or only not recommended.

The companions used to beat up their young children for praying between pillars as the prophet salla Allahu alaihi wa sallam told them not to do so. 

One should avoid it especially when there is enough space in the masjid.

QUESTION: Is it sinful to pray taraveeh and witr in congregation in the first row if it has pillar?
