A man must pay a mahar also known as sadaq which is a dowry he has to give for his bride. 

He is not obliged to give anything to the girl’s family. They have no right to demand any such thing from him

However, if this is a cultural thing, it is prohibited in Islam as it goes against the rulings of Allah. Try to convince your parents and if your father refuses, you can go to the Muslim court in your country and complain to them.

QUESTION: In my culture when two want to get married, the man MUST pay a ‘maal’. Which is money that he has to pay to the girl’s family in order to marry her. Is this permissible? From our knowledge, this is haram. I want to get married to this man, but my parents say I can’t since he isn’t willing to pay a ‘maal’. Also, what should I do in this situation?
