ANSWER:
You can put it down if you’re not reciting anything, however, instead of sitting idle you should say the salutations on Prophet salla Allahu alaihi wa sallam and even make dua if the imam is slow in his first tashahhud and keep making duas until the imam says salam to his left in the last tashahhud.
