ANSWER:

This is not true! 

Only in war or fear of death can one pray to other than the direction of qibla if needed as per the prayer of fear.

QUESTION: Did the some of these sahaba, when traveling in constant fear of enemy, prayed in whichever direction despite it not being the qibla? Is that true? Is it permissible today?
