21 Rabi al-Awwal 1443

I know that we should not keep/display pictures in the house, but I want to also know the severity behind this ruling. Is having pictures in the house (without worshipping them) a major sin or a minor sin? If it’s major, does it fall under the category of Shirk, which is almost unforgivable, or under another major sin that is slightly less severe?

ANSWER:

The prophet salla allahu alaihi wa sallam refused to enter his house when he saw such pictures hung on the wall and told Aisha may Allah be pleased with her: didn’t you know that the owners of this picture are being tormented on the day of judgement? He also told us that the angels of mercy won’t enter the house with such pictures.
