There isn’t anything in the Sunnah limiting the dowry to an amount of money. It depends on the country and the person paying that money. In the Gulf, 15,000 is average or a bit below average. The groom has to pay for everything such as the house and furnishing it. Therefore, it is OK to take this amount.

Is it permissible for a woman to completely forgive her Mahar at the time of nikah, by her complete will? In that case, if later she takes Khulaa from her husband, how will she return the Mahar if she hadn’t taken anything?

Who sets the mahr, the man or the woman, or the woman’s father?
