This kind of practice is totally inappropriate and unislamic and what you did was absolutely correct. This is degrading to the bride, they have no right in asking such a question. 

 

Sheikh, I’m newly married to my wife. There is a tradition in my culture, after the wedding, the in-laws expect to see the bed sheet or hear from their children if she was a virgin or not. I told my mother-in-law that I will not answer this question and I don’t believe I’m obligated to share. She said this is not haram and not an innovation. Please advise.
