ANSWER:

This is not appropriate as this would open doors for Satan to make them fall into sins by communicating in private etc. If this was done publicly, seriously without any flirting and for the benefit of people, this is permissible in Sha Allah. 

Is it permissible to respond to the opposite gender on an islamic topic or any permissible topic, on public platforms like youtube, twitter, instagram, facebook?

I invited a friend to join a whatsapp group for an Islamic society at the university but I think the group is sufi because one of the leaders celebrates mawlid and I have seen other things which seem strange.
