Yes, you must call them regularly to maintain Salam with them and see if they need anything and answer their invitations and invite them to yours. 

I don’t quite understand what it means to uphold the ties of kinship. Do I have to talk with my relatives on phone (I don’t live near them) regularly to uphold the ties? I see them once in a year or two.
