QUESTION: Sheikh, I will complete medical school this year and my elder brother is lagging behind by a few years. I’m ready for marriage and so is the person I want to marry. I have expressed my desire to my parents. They refused my request because they want me to wait for my brother and think it’s selfish for me to marry when his education hasn’t been completed. What should I do in this situation?

ANSWER: They have no right to stop you from marrying if you are financially independent and can take care of your wife and open up a home for her. Your brother’s marriage has nothing to do with you getting married. You can get married even if they are not ok with that.

QUESTION: I’m a Muslima from a Shia family and I practice sunnah (my family is against it) and I want to get married to this man who’s a practicing Muslim but his African. And their only reasoning for not agreeing with the marriage is that his black and think it will ruin their reputation. Would I have blessing in my marriage or my marriage be valid if I do it without their permission?

QUESTION: I am 34 year old woman. My parents keep rejecting all proposals I get coz their expectations are too high. Recently my friend introduced a guy to my family but they rejected him too saying he has sisters and will have to give them share from the property they owe. ANSWER: This is not permissible. The girl and the potential spouse get to meet only once in the presence of her mahram and its not permissible to keep meeting or chatting after that.
