In Islam, our Prophet salla Allahu alaihi wa sallam didn’t celebrate his own birthday nor the birthdays of other Prophets and companions. This is something that came to the Muslims from the customs of the non Muslims.
If they invite us, we shouldn’t accept and we should apologize politely. If they give us candies or cakes, I see no harm in accepting it as we didn’t celebrate with them.
If someone says happy birthday, we should reply by saying thank you if we believe that they wouldn’t understand. Otherwise, it is best to tell them about the ruling.
