You must not contact him yourself whatsoever as this is not befitting of a Muslima and he is non-mahram to you. Give him your brothers phone number and then cut off all communication with him; let your brother do all the talking and investigating. You can get to know him during the initial interview conducted by your wali after they had checked on him well.
